The Oakland Opera Theater production of the phenomenal
1995 opera by Philip Glass will feature a 10-piece orchestra, interactive
elements, and pays homage to the circus.
THE STORY
Beauty and the Beast is a fairy tale of love and desire,
interpreted dramtically in the Jean Cocteau film. The Philip Glass score
explores the relationship that these elements have in common with the
artistic process - from the composer's notes:
"A subtle reflection on the life of an Artist, Philip
Glass' second opera based on works by Cocteau, in its original version
performed in conjunction with the projected film (with the original version
soundtrack eliminated entirely). Presented as a simple fairy talem it
soon becomes clear that the history has taken on a broader and deeper
subject - the very nature of the creative process. Through an extraordinary
alchemy of the spirit, the ordinary world is transformed into a world
of magic. The power of the creative and the raw world of nature, represented
respectively by Beauty and the Beast, finally emerges and allows the world
of imagination to take flight."
THE SET
The fully-staged production will feature settings created by Tom Dean
& Garrett Lowe, with elements created by Oakland visual artists. The
audience begins the evening in a French café and later finds themselves
exploring the midway of a small European circus.
THE VENUE
All performances will be held at the Oakland Metro, our own venue, located
at 201 Broadway (@ 2nd St.) near Jack London Square.
