White Darkness

• Score - Tom Dean (after Prokofiev's Fiery Angel)

• Musical Director - Deirdre McClure •

• Stage Director - Michael Mohammed •

White Darkness is a collage of music, dance, theater and digital imagery, designed and performed by some of the Bay Area's most stellar artists.

THE STORY
White Darkness explores the tumultuous sights and sounds of the Bay Area circa 1978 through the eyes of Renata (portrayed by Erina Newkirk)--a troubled young woman seeking answers to the emotional and spiritual conflicts that have plagued her since childhood. From the Vodoun traditions of her grandmother to the Charismatic Cultism of Jim Jones' People's Temple, Renata (and her reluctant companion, Rupert) try to find ways to ease her torment. These themes are mirrored by Dan White's rise to power, his repressed and troubled inner life and eventual assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.

THE MUSIC
Tom Dean's dynamic & ornately woven tapestry of music, based on a 1927 opera by Serge Prokofiev entitled The Fiery Angel, combines classic orchestral instruments with Afro-Haitian rhythms, found sounds and recordings of historical figures and events from the late 70's. The music will be performed by a 13-piece orchestra under the direction of Deirdre McClure.

THE SET
The production will be fully-staged, with settings created by Garrett Lowe, digital/visual imagery by Ethan Hoerneman, and lighting design by Rob Anderson.

THE VENUE
All performances will be held at the Oakland Metro, our own venue, located at 201 Broadway (@ 2nd St.) near Jack London Square.
